Shillong, Apr 23: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has asked the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) not to issue any no objection certificate (NOC) for the proposed setting up of BSF’s battalion headquarter at Rangthong 12 km away from Mawkyrwat the district headquarter of South West Khasi Hills district.

A delegation of the KSU from South West Khasi Hills district on Monday met KHADC chief executive member, P.N. Syiem and sought his intervention into the matter.

The delegation has expressed strong opposition and demanded that NOC should not be issued by the KHADC to set up the BSF battalion headquarter in the area.

The KSU claimed that that there has been pressure from the BSF and the land owners to speed up the land acquisition process for the setting up of the battalion headquarter at Rangthong.

“We have urged the KHADC to immediately intervene and ensure that the two clans – Sanglein Basan and Syiemlieh must refrain from parting their land with the BSF,” KSU SWKH president Forwardman Nongrem said.

According to the union, if the BSF is allowed to acquire land in the area, it will be turned into a cantonment area which will be under the control of the defence and ministry of home affairs.
