Bye election to Ampati constituency on May 28

Shillong, Apr 26: The Election Commission of India on Thursday announced that bye election to Ampati constituency will take place on May 28 and votes will be counted on May 31.

The bye election is necessitated to fill up the vacant Ampati seat following the resignation of former chief minister, Dr Mukul Sangma, who is at present the leader of Opposition in the tenth Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

On March 16, Mukul resigned as MLA of Ampati, the constituency he had represented since 1993 after he got elected both as MLA of Ampati and Songsak constituency in the Assembly elections held on February 27 this year.

Filing of nominations will begin on May 3, the day when a notification for the bypoll will be issued and the last day for filing of nomination is May 10.

Scrutiny of nominations will take place on May 11 and the last date for withdrawal of nominations is May 14.

The bye election to Ampati will be held together with four Lok Sabha seats which include the lone Lok Sabha seat in Nagaland, Kairana in Uttar Pradesh, Palghar and Bhandara-Gondiya seats in Maharashtra and nine other Assembly seats which include, Jokihat in Bihar, Gomia and Silli Assembly seats in Jharkhand, Chengannur in Kerela, Palus Kadegaon in Maharashtra, Shahkot in Punjab, Taharali in Uttarakhand, Noorpur in Uttar Pradesh, and Maheshtala in West Bengal.
