Nine cases registered over posting of offensive comments, one arrrested

Shillong, June 20: Nine cases have been registered in Cyber Crime Police Station against some persons for posting offensive, inflammatory and derogatory statements and one person has been arrested in this regard.

A press release issued on Wednesday said that the Cyber Crime Wing of the Meghalaya police is actively monitoring the posts on social media which are offensive, inflammatory and derogatory as such kind of posts are liable for taking legal action as per provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000, the Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008 and Indian Penal Code

One person identified as Manbhalang Nongspung has been arrested for posting inflammatory materials in on social media platform. The accused has been remanded in judicial custody and many others have been summoned for questioning in the above cases and due legal action will be taken against those who have infringed upon the laws of the land.

Appealing to all citizens not to post offensive and inflammatory materials on social media, the police asked administrators of various social media groups to ensure no offensive posts are posted by members of the group.

Police also requested the administrators to inform police and Cyber Crime Wing if any such materials are posted in their group.
