Shillong, June 22: The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government has assured to study the feasibility of the proposal to create a new civil sub-division in Mawsynram.

The assurance was made by the deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong to a delegation of the All Mawsynram Constituency People’s Conference (AMCPC) that called on him at his residence here on Friday.

“He (Tynsong) has assured that the government would study the feasibility of the demand for upgrading the Mawsynram community & rural development block into a civil sub-division before taking a call on the matter,” AMCPC president Gilbert G Kharraswai said.

He said that the organization also extended its full support to the recent demand on the matter made by the Congress legislator from Mawsynram, H.M. Shangpliang.

According to him, Mawsynram highly deserved to be upgraded into a civil sub-division as it is one of the oldest Blocks, which was created prior to the inception of Meghalaya state.

On the other hand, Kharraswai urged the MLA and MDC of the constituency to refrain from politicizing the demand and to consider it as a need in view of the problems faced by the people especially those residing at the international border with Bangladesh.

Asked, he said, “We want to make this appeal because we don’t want them to have different opinion over the same issue.”

The AMCPC cited that recently the Shangpliang and PN Syiem, who is also the KHADC chief, had met the health minister AL Hek separately on the same day but different timing over the same issue which related to upgrading the Sawsymper sub-center to a PHC.

Meanwhile, the delegation also urged the intervention of the deputy chief minister who is also in charge of PWD department into the deplorable road condition from Hatmawdon – Dangar up to Trongpleng.

According to Kharraswai, the department had last repaired the road about 20 years ago.

He however said that Tynsong has assured that he would soon convene a meeting with the officials of the department including the executive engineer of Mawsynram division on the matter.
