Shillong, June 26: A three-member investigation team of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday recorded statements of the people residing at Them ïew Mawlong.
The team was sent by the NHRC and arrived in Shillong on Monday. The investigation came after a complaint was lodged by a Delhi-based organization recently.
The NHRC investigation team did not speak to media persons but said that they have been asked by the Commission and they will camp in Shillong for three days.
During the NHRC’s team visit to Them ïew Mawlong, women were also protesting against the move to relocate settlers from the area.
In the evening, the NHRC team met officials of the district administration which include magistrates and police and recorded their statements too.
The team may also take the statement of three persons who were assaulted at Them ïew Mawlong on May 31.
Meanwhile the move to identify the number of households and residents at Them ïew Mawlong was not successful as settlers did not cooperate with of the Shillong Municipal Board when it carried out the inventory survey.
Officials of the Shillong Municipal Board were asked to list down the number of houses as well as conduct the head count of people residing in such houses.
The exercise was part of the directive given by the high level committee in order to identify the number of legal and illegal settlers.
Except listing down of houses, the staff could not make the head count since majority of the houses were put under lock and key.
Six teams with three members each carried out the inventory survey.
Shillong Municipal Board officials said that a total of 128 employees of the board are residing at Them ïew Mawlong area.
