Shillong, Oct 29: All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge for Meghalaya, Dr. A. Chellakumar, on Wednesday claimed that several members from the ruling political parties have expressed their willingness to return to the Congress, adding that they would be officially inducted in the coming days.
“Many people from the ruling political parties have already conveyed their willingness to join back the Congress,” Dr. Chellakumar told reporters. “In due course of time, one by one, we will admit them — and you will all come to know about it.”
Dr. Chellakumar was speaking during a function to welcome former Rangsakona legislator Zenith Sangma back into the party fold. Describing him as an “old family member,” the AICC leader lauded Sangma’s long association and contributions to the Congress.
“It is my pleasure to welcome our old family member who has contributed so much to the Congress party,” he said. “Zenith Sangma has realized that the Congress is the best platform to uphold secular principles and the Constitution of the nation.”
He asserted that only the Congress can safeguard India’s secular fabric and democratic values.
Echoing similar sentiments, Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Vincent H. Pala said the new members had joined the party with a common goal — to fight against divisive forces and strengthen the Congress.
“Their sole intention of joining the Congress is to fight against common forces,” Pala stated. “In the Congress, we always put the party above personal interest.”
Pala further emphasized the Congress’s role in defending secularism, saying, “The Congress is the only party that has always defended, preserved, and promoted secularism in India. When the Congress is weak, our society is weak.”
Reflecting on the national political landscape, Pala added that the absence of Congress in power has often resulted in setbacks for the country.
“Sometimes it is good to be out of power, but whenever the Congress is out of power, the damage done in that short time takes time to repair,” he remarked. “It is high time that the people of Meghalaya and India realize that we should come back to the Congress.”
With the return of leaders like Zenith Sangma and others expected to follow, Pala expressed confidence that the Congress will emerge stronger in Meghalaya and continue working for the welfare of the people.
