NONGPOH, Dec 2: In a proud moment for Meghalaya, Aieibaniti Lyngdoh of Nongpoh, Ri Bhoi District, has secured a bronze medal in the 70kg women’s category at the Khelo India Assmita East Zone Women’s Weightlifting League 2025, held recently in Kolkata.
Aieibaniti was among 11 women weightlifters representing Meghalaya at the championship, and the only athlete from the state to win a medal in the event. Her achievement is particularly significant as this tournament marks the first-ever official representation of women’s weightlifting athletes from Meghalaya at a zonal Khelo India platform.

The Meghalaya contingent was led by Meghalaya Weightlifting Association President Donald Rymbai, while members of the Ri Bhoi Weightlifting Association, under the leadership of Anthony Kharnaior, were also present to support the athletes.
On returning home to Nongpoh, Aieibaniti received a warm public felicitation organised by the Dorbar Shnong Nongpoh Proper, the Women’s Organisations, and the Seng Samla, under the leadership of Plielad Tiewsoh, Assistant Rangbah Shnong. She was honoured with a traditional jain ryndia shawl and floral tribute. The event was attended by MDC Rona Khymdeit and NPYF Ri Bhoi President Pyndaplang Wahlang, among others.
Speaking during the felicitation, community leaders expressed pride and appreciation for Aieibaniti’s hard work, stating that her achievement will inspire many young girls across the district to pursue weightlifting and other sporting disciplines.
The medal marks a milestone moment in the sporting journey of Meghalaya, showcasing rising talent and emphasising the importance of encouraging women participation in competitive sports.
