Shillong, Aug 2: The All Meghalaya Dancing Association (AMDA) will hold the Salam India – season-2 to felicitate over 18 persons with disabilities (PWDs) who have completed their post graduation and other professional courses.
Announcing this at a press conference on Thursday, AMDA president Kitbok Thabah said, the felicitation programme will be held at the U Soso Tham Auditorium on October 6.
“We have decided this year that we will be felicitating over 18 persons with disabilities as a mark of recognition of their achievement in the field of education,†he told reporters.
On the other hand, Khasi Disabilities Association (KDA) president Starwin Kharjana said that most of PwDs whose names have been submitted for the felicitation programme have completed their master degrees, civil engineering, BE.B.Tech etc.
Asked, he however said almost all of them are still unemployed despite having completed their education.
“This is because of the state government’s failure to implement the 4 per cent job reservation as mandated by the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016,†Kharjana said.
Whether the association is considering moving the Court on this regard, the KDA president however said that the chief minister Conrad K Sangma had assured to convene a special meeting with the association to discuss on its demands.
“However, if the present government fails to address our grievances, the time will come that we would be compelled to knock on the Court’s door to ensure our rights are given to us†he added.
