Shillong, December 29: The All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association (AMKA) celebrated its 44th anniversary on December 23 with a special function at the Khasi National Dorbar Hall, Mawkhar, honouring black belt karatekas, medal winners, coaches and officials who have brought laurels to the association and the state over the past year.
The event was attended by karatekas, coaches, officials and members of AMKA, marking over four decades of the association’s contribution to the promotion and development of karate in Meghalaya.
As part of the programme, certificates were awarded to 22 karatekas who successfully completed their 1st Dan and 2nd Dan black belt gradings, recognising their dedication, discipline and commitment to the martial art.
National and regional medal winners were also felicitated for their outstanding performances in various championships. Coaches and officials were honoured in appreciation of their valuable service and consistent efforts towards nurturing talent and strengthening the karate ecosystem in the state.
The programme began with a welcome address by AMKA President Hunlang Lytan, who highlighted the significance of the association’s 44-year journey and its sustained role in shaping karate in Meghalaya. He underscored the values of discipline, dedication and unity that AMKA has upheld since its inception.
This was followed by a detailed report on the history, growth and legacy of AMKA presented by General Secretary Ksan Kupar Warjri. Recalling key milestones achieved over the decades, Warjri paid tribute to the association’s founder, the late Sensei Stephan Leong, who introduced karate in Meghalaya. He stated that the present success of AMKA is rooted in Leong’s vision, strict discipline, teaching methodology and emphasis on mutual respect among karatekas.
Urging the younger generation to uphold these values, Warjri said the teachings of the founder would continue to guide karatekas towards excellence. He recalled that under Leong’s leadership, several renowned international karatekas were produced, including Banshanlang Kharumnuid, Donboklang Lyngdoh, Damang Syngkon, Linza Syiem and others, who brought national and international recognition to the state.
Adding colour to the celebration, karatekas also presented cultural performances, including singing and dancing, which were warmly appreciated by the audience.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by senior karateka Lamerphylla Damesha Kharsati, who expressed gratitude to the association, office bearers, coaches, officials and participants for their support in making the 44th anniversary celebration a grand success.
