Anup Chetia praises Meghalaya Govt for opposing Citizenship (Amendment) Bill

Shillong, May 10: United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) general secretary Anup Chetia hailed the NPP-led government in Meghalaya for opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and urged the government in BJP-ruled Assam to do the same.

“We request the Assam government under the leadership of chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal to also take similar decision because Assam will be more affected than Meghalaya if the Bill is allowed to be implemented,” Chetia told reporters while taking part in a sit-in protest organized by the FKJGP in Shillong on Thursday.

He said that a BJP MLA in Assam had also opposed the Bill proposed by the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre.

Chetia, who is also the chief convener of the newly formed North East Indigenous People’s Forum (NEIPF), said that he is extending full support to the Conrad K Sangma-led government in Meghalaya.

“Our message to the people of Meghalaya is that you are not alone. We and all the people of the North Eastern region are with you. We need to fight this together because if the Bill is implemented, our demographic structure will change and this will lead to loss of identity,” the ULFA leader said.
