Shillong, September 9, 2025: Nongkrem MLA Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit has voiced serious concern over the alarming rise in drug addiction and HIV/AIDS cases in Meghalaya.
Speaking on the issue, Basaiawmoit revealed that more than three lakh people in the state are struggling with drug addiction, while Meghalaya ranks seventh in India in terms of HIV prevalence, with 0.54% of the population affected.
He questioned the government’s strategy in tackling the crisis, pointing to the ineffectiveness of the Drug Reduction, Elimination, and Action Mission (DREAM). He also alleged a possible nexus between drug cartels and certain officials, suggesting that the government may not be fully committed to addressing the menace.
The Nongkrem legislator stressed the need for a new, more comprehensive approach—one that tailors interventions to different categories of drug users and addresses the root causes of addiction. He further emphasized instilling moral values and discipline in children from a young age as a preventive measure.
Basaiawmoit went on to suggest introducing a course on “marriage as an institution” in schools and colleges to strengthen family bonds. On HIV/AIDS, he advocated for a holistic approach that incorporates morality and ethical values rather than relying solely on condom promotion campaigns.
