Shillong Nov 14: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the state government would soon take a call whether to institute an independent inquiry into the attack on social activist, Agnes Kharshiing and her friend, Amita Sangma in East Jaiñtia Hills district.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday at the sidelines of a function here on Wednesday, Conrad informed that he would soon convene a meeting on the matter.

“We will be consulting with all our colleagues in the Cabinet and will take a join decision on how we should move forward as yes it is a serious matter,” he said while responding to a query on the growing demand for instituting an inquiry into the incident.

Agnes and Amita received severe head injuries after they were attacked by a group of 30-40 people suspected to be mining mafias at Tuber Sohshrieh in coal-rich district of East Jaintia Hills on November 8.

The incident took place when they were returning from Ladrymbai after lodging a complaint against illegal mining and transportation of coal.

Police have so far arrested only two accused identified as Elphon Dkhar (22) and Meklison Siangshai (26).

The Chief Minister condemned the attack and assured that the state government would take stern measures to ensure that guilty are booked.
