Shillong Sept 11: A one-day awareness programme on social networking and cyber crime was organised at U Soso Tham Auditorium here on Tuesday.
The programme was organized by the State Child Protection Society in collaboration with the District Child Protection Unit, East Khasi Hill under the aegis of the Social Welfare Department.
State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) Chairperson, M. Kharkongor inaugurated the programme in the presence of Special Superintendent of Police (CID), R. Muthu, and Joint Director of Social Welfare Department, S. Rynga which was also attended by a large number of students.
Speaking on the occasion Kharkongor drew focus on the pros and cons of the internet and the use of social media and exhorted the youth to be judicious while using the internet.
“We cannot curb access to internet, but there is a need to increase awareness on the evils that lurk in the cyber world,†the SCPCR Chairperson said, while stressing the need to strengthen laws to protect child safety.
Muthu and Rynga, while sharing their thoughts on the occasion, urged students to be true to themselves while using social media platforms, to be alerted and not to get lured by online predators.
Resources persons from the cyber crime wing of CID of the state police enlightened the participants during the day long programme.
