BJP candidate from Shillong says he will not commit suicide over CAB issue

Shillong, May 23: BJP candidate and South Shillong MLA, Sanbor Shullai on Thursday said the responsibility to stop the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) now lies with the Congress MP Vincent H Pala, who got re-elected for the third time from Shillong Lok Sabha constituency.

“Since the people of Shillong constituency have reposed their faith on him (Pala), he should now take full responsibility he will have to take up the matter,” Shullai, told reporters.

Earlier, the BJP leader had announced that he would commit suicide if the CAB is implemented.

When asked, Shullai however changed his mind saying, “Now I have got a relief since the people did not vote for me, and I would not commit suicide anymore.”

Stating that the CAB is a dead issue, Shullai said that he would continue to oppose the CAB but would not take any responsibility if the BJP went ahead and implement it.

Quoting the party’s manifesto, BJP state president Shibun Lyngdoh said that the party would no doubt bring back the CAB so that it can be discussed.

Asserting that the Bill is not only for the North East region including Meghalaya but for the entire country, Lyngdoh said the party would have to create awareness on the Bill, if it is accepted by the people of the country.

It may be mentioned that people of the North East region have vehemently opposed the CAB as it seeks to provide citizenship to immigrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
