BJP says its performance in last Assembly polls in Meghalaya not “terrible”

Shillong, Aug 24: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claimed that though it won only two seats during the February 27-Assembly polls held this year, its performance cannot be considered as “terrible”.

Speaking to reporters here on Friday, BJP national spokesman, Nalin Kohli said, “The BJP’s performance cannot be considered a terrible performance if anyone is trying to consider that. The vote share of the BJP in Meghalaya has gone up from 1.5 per cent to almost 10 per cent.”

Kohli however said that people are entitled to choose their representatives and that is the strength of democracy.

Asked about the reason behind winning only two seats – Pynthorumkhrah and South Shillong, the BJP leader said that the BJP has a mechanism of studying both victory and defeat.

“We learn from those mistakes and we also understand the reason why we won, and we do that analysis all the time,” he said.

Whether the party is planning to set up candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections to be next year, Kohli however said it is still far away.

On elections to district councils in the state, the BJP leader said that the district council elections are a different ball game.

The BJP leader also expressed concern over the absence of anti-defection law in the three autonomous district councils (ADCs) in Meghalaya.
