BJP Will Retain Power in Assam, Says Sanbor Shullai

Shillong, April 8: Meghalaya Cabinet Minister and BJP leader Sanbor Shullai on Wednesday expressed confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will return to power in Assam, asserting that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will continue for another term.

“BJP will again retain power in Assam and Himanta Biswa Sarma ji will again continue as chief minister of Assam. That is no doubt,” Shullai said while commenting on the upcoming Assembly elections.

Dismissing concerns over anti-incumbency, he maintained that there is no such sentiment among the electorate. “There is no anti-incumbency in Assam,” he stated.

Citing large turnouts at campaign rallies, Shullai said the public response reflects strong support for the party. “Wherever Himanta Biswa Sarma and party leaders from Delhi are campaigning, lakhs of people are attending. This shows that they have decided to support the BJP,” he added.

Ready to Contest Shillong LS Bypoll if Party Decides

On the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha by-election, Shullai said the party’s central leadership has given a “green signal” for the BJP to field a candidate.

“The reports from the state president and party workers have been submitted to the party high command. The party from Delhi has given a green signal that BJP has to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha bypoll,” he said.

He noted that the formal process of inviting applications is yet to begin, even as internal discussions continue following the party’s recent foundation day.

When asked about his willingness to contest, Shullai reiterated his loyalty to the party. “I am a disciplined soldier of the party. If the party high command or state command asks me to contest, I will go to the battlefield and fight,” he said.

Recalling the 2019 Indian general election, Shullai said he was unexpectedly nominated just weeks before polling. “In 2019, I was informed at midnight that I had been fielded as a candidate. With only three weeks, I had to campaign across 36 constituencies,” he added.

“This time, I do not know who the party will nominate,” Shullai said, leaving the decision to the party leadership.
