BSNL to install wifi hotspots in 10 locations in Shillong city

Shillong, Aug 9: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) which is reviving its landline connection, will also install wifi hotspots in ten locations in the city within this month to further improve internet services.

BSNL (North East circle-1) chief general manager, K.K. Saxena told reporters here on Wednesday that under “ASEEM” plan, virtual landline connection at Rs 99 per year will be provided, and the customers would be allotted with a landline number of his/her choice.

“All incoming calls to the landline number will be forwarded to one number of any network as selected by the customer,” he said.

Saxena informed that wifi hotspots would be also launched in three segments – BSNL wifi, BSNL Broadband and BSNL 4G+ where customers can recharge from Rs 10 to Rs 1999 to avail the services.

“Wifi hotspots will function within a range of Rs 50 meter to 100 meters”, he said.

The locations where wifi hotspots would be made operational soon include, Khyndai Lad, NEIGRIHMS, CGMT office, Garikhana, Happy Valley, Rynjah Exchange, Forest Colony, J.N. Stadium, GMTD Shillong, and ICAR complex.

Wifi hotspots would be also installed in 12 locations each in Mizoram and Tripura, he said.
With the launch of international internet gateway where India imported 10 gigabits per second (Gbps) bandwidth internet from an internet port in Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh via Tripura, Saxena also claimed that internet services in Meghalaya and other states in the Northeast has further improved.
“The data volume has now increased to 10000+ GB from 3000 GB in the Northeastern region after the international internet gateway was laid,” he said.
