Shillong, Mar 7:
The budget session of the Meghalaya assembly will begin here on Friday with an address by Governor Tathagata Roy.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, who also holds the Finance portfolio, will present the budget on March 13.

However, the Budget session is likely to be a stormy one with the Opposition Congress all set to corner the government on a number of issues ranging from the failure of the government in the health sector and providing welfare schemes besides plight of farmers.

Congress legislator, Himalaya Muktan Shangpliang said the opposition has also decided to raise the issue on the failure of the National People’s Party-led government for its failure to curb the illegal immigrant issue following the publication of the complete draft National Register of Citizens in Assam.

“We will strongly take up the illegal immigrant issue in the state on the fallout of the publication of the NRC in Assam and the irresponsive action of the state government in checking the infiltration of the illegal immigrants,” Shanpliang said

He said the vexed inter-state boundary dispute with Assam will be taken up again in the assembly in view of the government irresponsive towards the people residing in those disputed border areas.

“They (government) keep on saying that we will be taking the issue with our counterparts but not a single meeting has been held so far. This only shows the lack of responsibility by this government,” the Congress legislator said.

He said the mining tragedy where 13 coal miners are still trapped inside an illegal coal mine in East Jaintia Hills district will also be taken up in the assembly.
