Shillong, Sept 5: The state Cabinet has approved the proposal to amend the Meghalaya Compulsory Registration of Marriage Act, 2012.

After the cabinet meeting held on Friday, home minister James K Sangma said the proposal sought to clearly define the word ‘official purposes’ in the Act.

As per information sought through RTI Act by the Maitshaphrang, it was revealed that most of the government departments are yet to implement the Act on the ground that the term ‘official purpose’ has not been clearly specified or defined in the Act.

The state government has issued a notification on December 5, 2016 directing that all government departments are mandated to ensure that individuals are made to submit their marriage certificate for all official purposes.
