Shillong, Nov 26: The Meghalaya Cabinet has approved a proposal to replace a flawed resolution on inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in the Eight Schedule to the Constitution of India with a rectified resolution during the special session of the Assembly on Tuesday.
After the meeting, Home Minister James K Sangma told reporters that the resolution for urging the Centre to include Khasi and Garo languages in the Eight Schedule will again be passed in the House since the resolution passed by the Assembly on September 27, requires few changes.
“Necessary corrections have been incorporated into the resolution,†Sangma said.
The State government has to bring a fresh resolution after the resolution which was passed by the Assembly on September 27 has mentioned some hurdles in fulfilling the criteria such as creation of Sahitya Akademi or Sabha and the use of Khasi as the medium of instruction in educational institutions.
The Khasi Authors’ Society (KAS) had urged the government to remove these hurdles from the resolution so that the Centre will deal with the resolution positively.
“The resolution if forwarded in its present form may not be considered by the Central government,†the KAS feared.
