Shillong, Feb 23: The campaign for the elections to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council and Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council will end on Monday, and the show of strength by candidates has started on Saturday.
Many candidates organized bike and car rally in their respective constituencies to show their strength while there were candidates who organized public meeting which was participated by thousands of supporters.
Show of strength in terms of number of supporters has been the most common strategy adopted by candidates especially when the campaign is approaching to an end.
The campaign will end on Monday at 4 pm.
While some candidates organized rallies by bringing their supporters together in one venue, some candidates marched in processions along with their supporters as a show of strength.
On Saturday, the Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma also campaigned in some places under Mawsynram constituency for NPP candidate, Alvin Sawkmie. The Chief Minister addressed the rally at Patakat and Sonatola area and urged the people of Mawsynram to vote for the NPP candidate.
The elections to two district councils will be held on February 27, and counting of votes will take place on March 2.
The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council and Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) has a total of 9,84,477 voters.
The KHADC has a total of 7,35,143 voters, while the JHADC has a total of 2,49,334 voters.
The KHADC and JHADC have 29 constituencies each.
There are 1,433 polling stations spread across the 29 constituencies of KHADC while the 29 constituencies of the JHADC have just 408 polling booths.
Altogether, 131 candidates joined fray for the polls to the KHADC and 101 candidates for the JHADC.
