Shillong, October 8, 2025: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested three officials of the Postal Department in Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills district for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹30,000 from a Gram Dak Sevak.
The arrested officials include an Assistant Branch Post Master posted in Williamnagar, a Sub-Division Inspector, and a Postman.
According to the CBI, the officials had demanded a bribe equivalent to two months’ salary from the complainant, a Gram Dak Sevak, in exchange for releasing his salary that had been withheld by the department for the past 10 months. Following negotiations, the amount was settled at ₹30,000.
Acting on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap and apprehended the Assistant Branch Post Master red-handed while accepting the bribe.
Searches conducted at the offices and residences of the accused led to the recovery of several incriminating documents and the seizure of ₹2.3 lakh in cash from the residence of the accused postman in Upanagar village, Tripura.
The arrested officials are being produced before a competent court. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the possible involvement of other Postal Department employees in the case.
