Imphal, Nov 22: Sleuths of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday raided the residences of former Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh at Thoubal and Imphal on Friday.
The former Chief Minister, who was also the Chairman of Manipur Development Society (MDS), is accused of embezzling public funds to the tune of Rs. 332 crore out of the total amount of Rs. 518 crore.
Apart from raiding Ibobi’s residence, the CBI sleuths conducted searches at nine locations including Mizoram’s capital Aizawl, Manipur’s capital Imphal, Haryana’s Gurgaon in a case relating to misappropriation of government funds.
Ibobi is neither in Imphal or Thoubal and has been camping in New Delhi with his party legislators to urge Prime Minister Narendra Modi to protect Manipur during talks with various Naga rebel factions and not to introduce the amendment of the Citizenship Act, 1955 in the Parliament.
The other accused in the case include Y. Ningthem Singh, former Project Director of MDS; D.S. Poonia, IAS (Retd.), the then Chairman of MDS; P.C. Lawmuknga, IAS (Retd.), the then Chairman of MDS; O. Nabakishore Singh, IAS (Retd.), the then Chairman; S. Ranjit Singh, Administrative Officer, MDS and others.
“We have registered a case against all of them and investigation is on,†a CBI official said.
Meanwhile, Congress Spokesperson, Ningombam Bupenda Meitei termed CBI’s raid on nine locations, including Ibobi’s residence as “clear political vendetta to intimidate Ibobi Singh and Congress’ opposition.â€
“Any action to scuttle our democratic voices will remain unsuccessful as we struggle with the people of Manipur to protect and safeguard Manipur,†Ningombam said.
