Shillong, Oct 16: Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma has asserted the need for the Centre to hold consultation with all stakeholders before taking any decision on the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), 2016.

“We have discussed that there must be consultation before such an act is put in parliament,” Sangma, also the national president of the National People’s Party (NPP), told reporters here on Wednesday.

He said that people from different states, political parties and organizations must be consulted because this issue is something which will affect all.

Sangma also recalled that the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah during a separate meeting held with chief ministers at Guwahati, had assured that he would ensure the concerns of the states are addressed in a proper manner.

“I think that exercise he (Shah) is doing now. He has visited Mizoram the other day and met the CM and other organizations and obviously in Meghalaya, we intent to ensure that we move in that manner,” he added.

Earlier this month, a region-wide public protest was also organized by different social organizations of the North East including Meghalaya, demanding the Centre to scrap off the CAB, which seeks to provide citizenship to immigrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
