Shillong Aug 31: Meghalaya was on high alert on Saturday following the publication of the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) list in neighboring Assam which saw the exclusion of over 19 lakh persons.

According to the final NRC list, 19,06,657 persons have been excluded.

Not only the state police that conducted checking on national highways along the Meghalaya-Assam border, activists of the Khasi Students Union (KSU) also remained vigil

The KSU members were present on various check points from 11 am to detect illegal infiltrators.

Meanwhile the KSU demanded from the government to implement a census similar to the NRC in order to detect and weed out foreigners.

“Since the government is taking time to construct the entry and exit points, there should be temporary check points along the inter-state border and more man power should be deployed in infiltration check gates of the state police,” the KSU said.

At the check points being manned by the state police, KSU members were also present which include the check gate at Byrnihat in Ri-Bhoi district and East Jaiñtia Hills district.

The national highway connecting Assam’s Barak Valley is passing through Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district, East Khasi Hills, West Jaiñtia Hills and East Jaiñtia Hills district.
