CM appeals to citizens to maintain peace

Shillong Feb 29: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has appealed to the citizens of the State to refrain from any kind of violence and ensure that peace is maintained in the state.

The chief minister said that a magisterial probe has been ordered into the incident in which Lurshai Hynñiewta succumbed to injuries he suffered at Ichamati on Friday and informed that the government has taken all measures to maintain law and order with deployment of additional forces including increase of man power in Sohra Sub division to monitor and contain the situation.

To assess the prevailing situation, the Chief Minister along with his cabinet colleagues held a meeting in the presence of Additional Chief Secretary (Home Police), DGP, SP, DC of East Khasi Hills and officials of Political department on Saturday.

Eight people have been arrested following the incident on Friday evening at Ichamati under Shella constituency of East Khasi Hills district and cases against the arrested individuals have been filed.

“The State Police are taking all steps to maintain the law and order,” the Chief Minister said.

He also conveyed his sincere condolences to the family members of the deceased.

An ex-gratia amount of Rs. 2 lakh will be given to the next of kin of the deceased.

In ïewduh area of Shillong, one Rupchand Dewan succumbed to injuries after he was stabbed by miscreants.

“Police investigation is underway to identify the culprit and take necessary action as per law,” the chief minister said.
