Shillong, June 12: The move of senior Congress MLA from Ranikor, Martin M. Danggo to join the National People’s Party (NPP) has been set in motion on Tuesday.
The Ranikor Block Congress Committee was dissolved during a meeting at Ranikor where thousands of people welcomed Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma who paid a maiden visit the area in South West Khasi Hills district.
Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong, Home Minister, James K. Sangma, C&RD Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, Deputy Speaker, Timothy D. Shira, and other MLAs accompanied the Chief Minister.
During the meeting, the President and General Secretary of the Block Congress Committee lowered down the Congress flag which marked the dissolution of the Ranikor Block Congress Committee.
Thereafter, the National People’s Party flag was hoisted at the gathering in the presence of a large number of Congress workers and supporters who also decided to join the National People’s Party.
Amid inclement weather, people of Ranikor constituency turned up in large number to welcome the Chief Minister and other dignitaries.
State NPP president Dr. W.R. Kharlukhi also dissolved the NPP Ranikor Block unit to pave way for the formation of a new body at the earliest.
Several leaders and Congress workers joined the NPP at the public meeting.
Conrad said that the demand for creation of a new Ranikor Civil Sub-Division was genuine and would soon be fulfilled.
“It is the long pending demand of the people and I assure that the Government has decided to consider the popular demand of the people. We will finalise the date for the inauguration of the new Civil Sub-Division at the earliest,†said the Chief Minister.
During the meeting, the Congress block unit was dissolved by the President and General Secretary of the Block Congress unit, who were welcomed by the State NPP President Dr. W.R. Kharlukhi in presence of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, who is also the National President of NPP.
The sitting Congress MLA (Danggo) also submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister and urged him to fulfill the demand to create a Civil Sub-Division at Ranikor.
Danggo, who hosted the public meeting on behalf of the people of Ranikor Constituency, said that he has the confidence and foresee a brighter future for Meghalaya under able and dynamic leadership of Conrad.
“I am thankful to the Chief Minister for his assurance to accept our memorandum and demands. I assure him that I will resign from the Congress party as and when the date for the inauguration of the new Civil Sub-Division is made by the Chief Minister,†Danggo said, as he sought people’s support to be part of the endeavour.
Others who attended the programme were Mawkyrwat MLA Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, Siju Rongra MLA Rakkam Sangma, Williamnagar MLA Marcus Marak, Mawshynrut MLA Gigur Myntrong.
The People of Ranikor constituency welcomed the Chief Minister at three different locations amidst joy for his maiden visit to the area.
