Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday chaired a meeting of the selection committee for appointing the chairperson and members of the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC).

Sangma told reporters that decision has been made on the matter but it will not be right for him to announce the names since a notification is yet to be issued.

He said that the meeting discussed on different names including two for the post of the chairperson proposed by members and officials of the committee.

He said the commission is comprising of three members which include the chairperson who is supposed to be a retired chief justice of a high court, while the second member should have legal background and the third should be a member who has experience in the issues related to human rights.

The MHRC is presently headed by the chairperson (Acting), P J P Hanaman following the retirement of its chairperson, Aftab Hussain Saikia, retired chief justice of High Court, earlier this year.
