Shillong, October 10, 2025: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has reiterated the state government’s strong commitment to fully resolve the long-pending border dispute with Assam — an issue that has remained unsettled for more than two decades.
Speaking to reporters, Sangma said the boundary difference is a sensitive matter but one that can and must be resolved, as it directly impacts the lives of those living along the inter-state border. He noted that relations between the two states have improved considerably in recent years, with ongoing discussions remaining “meaningful and hopeful.”
“Previous governments did not take serious steps to resolve this issue, but we have taken it upon ourselves to visit, listen, and engage in dialogue with a sense of unity,”
said Conrad K. Sangma.
Ongoing Efforts and Progress
In 2022, the governments of Meghalaya and Assam signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that successfully settled six of the twelve disputed areas. The Chief Minister informed that efforts are underway to resolve the remaining six, with both state governments working closely to expedite the process.
Strengthening Peace and Development in Border Regions
Sangma further stated that the government has taken several measures to strengthen peace and development in the sensitive border regions. These include enhancing local leadership, setting up new Border Outposts (BOPs), increasing police presence, and promoting developmental activities aimed at improving the lives of residents along the border.
The border issue dates back to the creation of Meghalaya in 1972, when the state’s boundaries with Assam were not clearly demarcated — leading to recurring disputes and administrative challenges for border villages.
Dialogue and Lasting Resolution
The Chief Minister emphasized that his government remains committed to a dialogue-based resolution, involving both state governments, community leaders, and local residents.
“The delay is due to historical complexities, but if we continue to cooperate and maintain consistent dialogue, a resolution will definitely be achieved,”
he added.
Under Conrad K. Sangma’s leadership, the Meghalaya government has reaffirmed that resolving the border issue remains a top priority — a step toward ensuring lasting peace, harmony, and freedom for the people residing in the border regions.
