Shillong, June 6: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday came down heavily on the opposition Congress for its failure to resolve the ban on coal mining during the last four years.
“The fact is that, the Meghalaya government and the chief minister at that point of time, did not do anything about it (coal mining issue) and has simply left things unattended,†Sangma told reporters on Thursday.
Sangma was reacting to the recent allegations made by the Leader of Opposition and former chief minister Mukul Sangma, who accused the NPP-led MDA government of “looting†the state’s exchequer in the name of illegal mining and transportation of coal.
“It has clearly reflected on what was going on that time. If he (Mukul Sangma) or his government or colleagues are pointing fingers at us, I think they should first look at what they have done during those four years for they did not take any initiative to ensure that this issue is resolved,†the Chief Minister slammed.
He also alleged that the then Congress regime has failed to address the problems in the implementation of various missions which include the agar mission, livestock mission, organic mission and others.
He however claimed that it is MDA government that has worked overtime to ensure that everything is streamlined. “This clearly reflects the intention, and the objective in the way we plan to work,†he said.
“On the coal issue, it is clear that their intention (Congress) was not good at that point in time, but it is this government that is ensuring everything falls in place,†the Chief Minister claimed.
On the allegations that ministers are getting share from the illegal mining of coal, he said, “I think responsible leaders should substantiate whatever points they have, and come up with proofs. It is incorrect for them to talk like that, as I said, may be it is just a statement they are making, may be they have no other things to talk about right now.â€
Meanwhile, the chief minister said that the case related to the ban on coal mining is still pending in Supreme Court and the state government is waiting for the verdict, expectedly by the first or second week of next month.
