CShillong, Oct 16: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday chaired a high-level meeting to review the rising incidents of crimes against women and children in the state and expressed deep concern over the increasing spread of misinformation on social media.
The Chief Minister cautioned citizens against reacting to unverified news circulating on platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and YouTube, stressing that such misinformation often leads to public panic, crowd gatherings, and even mob reactions.
“Because of misinformation on platforms like WhatsApp or YouTube, we often see crowd gatherings and mob reactions. I urge everyone not to take the law into their own hands. Verify facts and inform the police or local authorities instead,”
Sangma said.
He further appealed to journalists, media houses, and social media users to exercise restraint and responsibility while sharing information online.
“Unverified news can trigger law and order problems. The media and social media influencers must verify facts before posting,”
the Chief Minister added.
Sangma reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring public safety, peace, and responsible information dissemination through verified and factual reporting.
