Coal Ministry asks Meghalaya Govt to work on different modalities on coal mining ban issue

Shillong May 12: The Union Ministry of Coal has asked the Meghalaya government to work on different modalities to find solution to the ban on coal mining in the state.

A team from the Union Ministry of Coal is also likely to visit Meghalaya soon.

This was informed by Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma on Saturday after his meeting with Union Coal Minister Piyush Goyal to take the discussion forward on coal mining in the State.

Meghalaya Advocate General, Amit Kumar accompanied the Chief Minister and held separate detailed discussion with the officials of the Ministry of Coal which was also attended by Additional Secretary and Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Coal.

“The discussion to restart coal mining in Meghalaya has progressed positively. The Ministry has asked us to work on different modalities, which is being prepared by the State government. A team from the Ministry is likely to visit the State soon”, the Chief Minister said in a statement issued on Saturday.

Terming the meeting a fruitful, the Chief Minister said, “All cooperation and support has been extended by the Centre to resolve the ban on coal mining in Meghalaya.”

In the last two months, the Chief Minister has called on the Union Coal Minister thrice.

The ban on coal mining in Meghalaya has been banned since April 17, 2014.
