CoMSO to protest against Governor for delaying to approve Ordinance

Shillong, Dec 7: The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organization (CoMSO) has threatened to protest against the Governor Tathagata Roy for delaying in giving his assent to the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security (Amendment) Ordinance, 2019.

“We will protest against thegovernor for delaying his assent to the ordinance,” chairman of the confederation Robertjune Kharjahrin told reporters after a meeting on Saturday.

The ordinance, which seeks to make it mandatory for registration of outsiders visiting the state, was approved by the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government on November 1.

According to the ordinance, any person who fails to furnish the information or who provide false information will be liable to be punished under the section of 176 or 177 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) 1860.

The governor had recently informed that he is still examining the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security (Amendment) Ordinance, 2019 while also expressing that he may need to consult legal experts before approving it.

Stating that the MRSSA has been a long pending demand, Kharjahrin however said, “If the chief minister, deputy chief minister and other law makers who are duly elected by the people have approved the ordinance then who is the governor to stop the voice of the majority.”

“We therefore urge the governor to respect the sentiments of the indigenous people by immediately granting his assent,” he said.
