Shillong Apr 5: The resignation letter of Congress general secretary, John F. Kharshiing has been accepted by the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Friday.

In a statement issued on Friday, MPCC general-secreray, Waibha K. Kyndiah said that the resignation of Kharshiing from the party has been accepted.

“I am yet to decide whom I will lend my support, but following my resignation, there has been communications from the UDP as well the BJP,” Kharshiing said.

Kharshiing had unsuccessfully contested the Assembly elections from Nongkrem Assembly constituency held on February 27, 2018.

Kharshiing decided to quit the party after his name as applicant vying for Congress ticket to contest the Lok Sabha polls from Shillong was not sent by the MPCC to the AICC.

Kharshiing’s name was recommended by the Nongkrem Block Congress Committee that he should be the candidate for the Lok Sabha polls from Shillong constituency, but Kharshiing did not apply for ticket officially.

The MPCC had sent the names of only three aspirants who had applied for party ticket, which include sitting Congress MP, Vincent H. Pala, former minister, H.D.R. Lyngdoh and former legislator, Kennedy C. Khyriem.

The two Lok Sabha constituencies – Shillong and Tura — will go to polls on April 11.

The Congress is fielding Pala as the candidate, who is seeking his re-election for the third consecutive time from Shillong constituency.

Pala is facing United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate, Jemino Mawthoh, Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) nominee, Sanbor Shullai and three Independents – T.H.S Bonney, Samuel Hashah and Romeo Phira Rani. (EoM)
