Shillong, Jan 18: The opposition Congress has asked its candidates contesting the upcoming elections to the district councils to vigorously explain the “danger and impact” of the policy and programmes of the BJP-led government.

The party gave this instruction during a meeting with the candidates where AICC Secretary in-charge Meghalaya, Victor Keishing, Congress MP, Vincent H. Pala and other leaders addressed the meeting which was chaired by MPCC President Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh at Congress Bhawan here on Friday.

Keishing appealed to the candidates to work hard and serve in the best interest of the people.

“He (Keishing) asked them (candidates) to vigorously explain the danger and impact of the policy and programmes of the BJP Government, an ally of the MDA Government,” a statement issued by MPCC general secretary, W.K. Kyndiah said.

Keishing alleged that the farmers’ plight have been neglected by the MDA Government and asked the candidates to take up the issue at the proper forum as the farmers were being exploited by the middlemen.

He also called upon the party workers to respect the traditional institutions and to be cautious of any move by the Centre to weaken its structure.

Keishing expressed hope that the party would win the forthcoming elections to the District Councils as well as the Lok Sabha.

In his speech, Pala talked about the danger of the Citizenship Amendment Bill and its impact on the indigenous people.

He reminded that the Village Administrative Bill (VAB) could not be implemented because of the BJP Government’s failure.

Pala also recalled the achievements of the Congress party and asked the candidates to highlight the same to the people.

Others who spoke include Congress MLA from Mawsynram, H. M. Shangpliang, Mawlai MLA, P.T. Sawkmie, AICC Mahila Secretary and former MLA, Deborah C. Marak, and some of the candidates including former Urban Affairs Minister, R.V. Lyngdoh who is contesting from Mylliem constituency.
