Shillong, Apr 14: The opposition Congress in Meghalaya staged a protest in Shillong and other districts of the state against idea of issuing work permit to Bangladeshi nationals.

In Shillong, the protest was held at Congress Bhavan and a similar protest was also organized at Mendipathar in Garo Hills.

The opposition party accused chief minister Conrad Sangma of proposing the idea of issuing work permit to the Bangladeshi nationals during his meeting with External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj in New Delhi.

Congress MLAs and party leaders assembled at the Congress Bhavan and raised placards and banners.

CLP spokesperson, Zenith Sangma said that the idea of issuing permits to Bangladeshi nationals cannot be not accepted especially when the state has been facing the problem of illegal immigration.

He also pointed out that youths in the state are facing problem in getting jobs and questioned the need to bring people from foreign countries and work in the state
