Shillong, Sept 10: Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader, Mukul Sangma on Monday said that the Congress would like to give an opportunity to the people of the state to see the difference between the Congress government and NPP government, and his party was not in hurry to form the government with other parties.
“We are not in a hurry to form the government. Let the people of the state have the privilege to see the difference between us (Congress government) and them (NPP government). That is more important because we had the privilege of being at the helm of affairs of governance for quite a long time, and they are desperate to be in power. So let them prove their worth,” Mukul said when asked if the Congress is making a move to form the government with other parties in Meghalaya like in Karnataka.
The Congress has 20 legislators in the 60-member Assembly and the NPP also has 20 MLAs is leading the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government.
Recently, NPP state president, W.R. Kharlukhi made a comment against the Congress in the state after the results of the bye elections to South Tura and Ranikor Assembly constituencies.
“I pity the Congress; they are like in between the devil and deep blue sea. If they still keep Mukul as their leader, they will never be able to form the government and everybody knows about his dictatorial attitude. If they throw Mukul out, Congress is gone in Meghalaya. This is the situation the Congress is facing in Meghalaya now,” Kharlukhi
Howeveer Mukul said, “They (NPP) are scared and they talked based on gossip. They are scared, that is why they wanted to get by hook or by crook one MLA resigned. It proves beyond reasonable doubt that they are in a very shaky wicket.”
Martin M. Danggo resigned as Congress MLA from Ranikor constituency and joined the NPP.
However, Danggo lost as NPP candidate in the bye elections held on August-23.
“We understand how enlighten, alert and vigilant the society in Meghalaya and they will respond to the given situation. I have maintained this stand all these years that we are privileged to have a vigilant, alert and assertive society,†the former Chief Minister added.
