Shillong, Feb 01: The ruling Congress in Meghalaya was elated for winning by-polls in Rajasthan, few days before going to Assembly polls slated for February 27.
The Congress on Thursday won the Mandalgarh Assembly seat as well as the Ajmer and Alwar Lok Sabha seats in Rajasthan bye-elections, while the Trinamool Congress won Naopara and Ulluberia constituencies in West Bengal.
Reiterating Congress president, Rahul Gandhi who on Wednesday stated that the Congress will win in upcoming Assembly elections to be held in various states of the country, Chief Minister, Mukul Sangma said, “This is an actual anger and frustration against the BJP-combined government by the people of the country. As articulated by the Congress president, this will also happen in the next general elections in 2019. Today’s results in Rajasthan are indications of what is going to come,†chief minister, Mukul Sangma said on Thursday.
Commenting on the Assembly polls in Meghalaya to be held on February 27, the chief minister said that the maturity of the people of Meghalaya has always been more vigilant and alert in fighting against forces that create chaos and disorder in the country.
He also congratulated the people of Rajasthan for giving a befitting reply to “divisive forces.â€
“We are proud that the people have stood up against these forces of polarization. This is the beginning of the end and the writing is on the wall for the current dispensation to mend their way or perish,†he said.
Congress national spokesperson, Tom Vadakkan told reporters at Congress Bhavan here that similar reactions would be seen across the country, which the people of Meghalaya are also watching.
“The Congress is reflecting people’s voices and raised issues which affect the people of India,†he said.
On the Union budget presented by Union finance minister, Arun Jaitley on Thursday, Vadakkan while slamming the NDA government said that the budget has nothing for the Northeast.
He alleged that the Northeast has been taken for a ride which reflected its reality in the budget.
According to Vadakkan, broken promises, failure to deliver are hallmarks of the Modi government, while terming the NDA government a “deficit government†which brought trust deficit among the people.
Slamming the NDA government over poor implementation of GST, Vadakkan said, “GST is a standing example of what the Congress–led UPA government tried to do, but the NDA messed it up. We had marked out the taxation rate and everything was planned and choreographed by economic experts, but the GST has created a situation which is one of the main reasons for price rise across the country.â€
AICC co-ordinator in Meghalaya, Bobbeeta Sharma said that people of the Northeast also required jobs and development like the rest of the country.
She recalled that implementation of the North East Industrial Promotion Policy during the UPA government but the policy was scrapped since 2015 by the present Modi government.
“After the policy was scrapped, the process of development stopped because businesses have not come in. What we need is investments to come to the region and the people look forward the Union budget. Who will come and invest in the region, and how job will be created is a question we are asking the NDA government,†she said.
