Conrad inspects Mawlai bypass, Umroi Airport

Shillong, Apr 21: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Saturday inspected the ongoing construction of a bypass road at Mawlai and VIP road connecting the Shillong City with Umroi Airport via Mawlai.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Mawlai MLA Process T. Sawkmie and Umroi MLA George B. Lyngdoh were also present along with other officials.

The Chief Minister also inspected the expansion of the Airport at Umroi in presence of officials from the Transport department and officials of the Airport Authority of India.

“Work for Mawlai bypass is in progress in full swing to ensure that the project becomes operational at the earliest. We are working on tight deadlines and early completion of the road is very important as this will be an effort to ease traffic congestion in Shillong city,” the Chief Minister said after inspecting the Mawlai bypass.

He also inspected the VIP road stretching from Mawlai to Umroi and discussed at length with officials to improve the road.

The Chief Minister stressed on the need to improve air connectivity in the State and said that he would travel to Delhi next week to discuss on improving air connectivity in Meghalaya particularly the Umroi airport, which is important in view of the National Games to be hosted in Meghalaya in 2022.

“We discussed about measures to be taken for expansion of runways and technical feasibility to make the airport fully functional,” the Chief Minister said.
