Shillong, Aug 29: Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma will take oath as the MLA of South Tura on September 5, and Ranikor MLA, Pius Marweiñ will take oath on Thursday afternoon.
Both Conrad and Pius were elected as members of the 10th Meghalaya Assembly from South Tura and Ranikor respectively in the bye elections held on August 23.
The oath to Pius will be administered in the office chamber of the Assembly Speaker at Khyndai Lad at 2 pm.
In the bye elections to South Tura constituency and Ranikor constituency, Conrad defeated Congress candidate, Charlotte W. Momin in South Tura, while Pius defeated NPP candidate, Martin M. Danggo in Ranikor.
Conrad won by a margin of 8,421 votes, while Pius defeated five-time MLA, Martin M. Danggo of the NPP by a margin of 2,896 votes.
Marweiñ got 13,183 votes, and Danggo got 10,287 votes.
The victory in South Tura and Ranikor increased of the NPP’s tally to 20 MLAs, and the UDP to seven MLAs in the 60-member Assembly.
Both the NPP and UDP are partners in the MDA government. The MDA government is being led by the NPP under the leadership of Conrad as Chief Minister.
The Chief Minister who is still the Lok Sabha MP from Tura parliamentary constituency, would resign as Member of Parliament within one week after getting elected as the MLA of South Tura constituency.
The Chief Minister is likely to submit his resignation as Member of Parliament to Lok Sabha Speaker, Sumitra Mahajan during his stay in New Delhi.
He will leave Shillong for New Delhi on Thursday to attend a programme in Parliament to commemorate the birth anniversary of his late father, Purno Agitok Sangma, who was also the Speaker of Lok Sabha.
During his stay in New Delhi, the Meghalaya Chief Minister will also call on some Union Ministers.
