Email :37

Shillong, May 30: Ampati constituency is set to get a new representative as the result of the bye election would be declared on Thursday.

Amid tight security, votes will be counted at Ampati, the district headquarters of South West Garo Hills district from 8 am onwards.

The result of the bypoll would decide the strength of both the ruling NPP and opposition Congress in Assembly.

The Congress that fielded Miani D. Shira, an eldest daughter of Leader of Opposition, Mukul Sangma, is looking to retain the Ampati seat, which was represented by Mukul for the last 25 years since 1993.

However the NPP also hoped that its candidate, Clement G. Momin will win the bye election and further strengthen the position of not only the party but the coalition Meghalaya Democratic Alliance under the leadership of Tura MP, Conrad K. Sangma as Chief Minister.

If the Congress retains the seat, its strength Assembly will increase to 21 members and emerged as the single largest party. Similarly, the NPP will also emerge as the single largest party if it wins the Ampati seat.

The NPP and Congress now has 20 MLAs each in the 60-member Assembly.
