Shillong Apr 30: The fate of nine candidates who contested the Williamnagar Assembly poll will be decided on Tuesday.

Votes polled during the election held on April 27, will be counted on Tuesday at Williamnagar from 8 am onwards amid tight security.

The election to the Assembly seat saw a turnout of 78.82 per cent as people exercised their right to franchise to choose an MLA who will represent Williamnagar constituency to the tenth Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

The voting was held in 58 polling booths spread across the constituency.

Rongreng Biza recorded the highest turnout of voters with 92.5 per cent, and Williamnagar Govt L.P. School, recorded the lowest just 55.57 per cent.

Williamnagar is being represented by Congress MLA, Deborah C. Marak who fought to retain the seat.

The election to Williamnagar was to be held along with other 59 Assembly constituencies on February 27, but the election was countermanded following the killing of Jonathone N. Sangma who was the NCP candidate on February 18.

In the place of Jonathone, the NCP has fielded his wife, Krenila Marak as the candidate.

Besides Deborah and Krenila, the other seven candidates in the fray include NPP candidate, Marcuise Marak, Mahamsing M. Sangma (UDP), Santosh R. Marak (BJP), and four Independents – Sengbath R. Marak, Lahatson N. Marak, Siljong R. Marak, and Jan N. Arengh.
