Nongpoh, Dec 3: Ri-Bhoi district witnessed a proud moment once again as Dahunshisha Khymdeit, a young karate athlete from Nongpoh, returned home as the Champion of the National Open Full Contact Karate Championship 2025, held recently in Kolkata.
Representing Meghalaya under the banner of the Meghalaya Kyokushin Karate Association, led by Elton Swer and Hamar Sohmat, Dahunshisha’s achievement has brought honour to her family, her village, Ri-Bhoi district and the state as a whole.

Grand welcome on arrival
On her return on Monday along with the state contingent, Dahunshisha received a grand welcome from her family members, relatives and officials of the Association at the Railway Station in Assam, where many were seen overwhelmed with joy as she arrived carrying the title.
She was ceremonially honoured with traditional attire, flowers and a victory shawl. Members of the Kur Malai and Kur Khymdeit clans, along with leaders of the Association, accompanied her in a celebratory procession from Jorabat to Nongpoh. A short felicitation gathering was later held at Green Hill Restaurant, Pahamrioh, attended by KHADC Nominated MDC Mathew Makdoh, clan elders and supporters.

Meghalaya contingent shines
The state sent 12 athletes to the National Championship, of which five returned as medallists. They include:
Dahunshisha Khymdeit – Champion
Mebankhrawbok Kharbani – 2nd place (East Khasi Hills)
Imaginary Khongjee – 2nd place (East Khasi Hills)
Nanpul Terang – 3rd place (Ri-Bhoi)
Francis Makri – 3rd place (Ri-Bhoi)
Words of encouragement
Speaking during the felicitation, MDC Mathew Makdoh advised young athletes to remain humble and continue working hard towards higher achievements.
“Success should not lead to arrogance. Discipline and consistent effort are the key to greater heights in life,” he said.

The heartfelt celebrations surrounding Dahunshisha’s return reflected the pride of the district, which continues to produce talented sportspersons performing at the national level. Her victory serves as an inspiration for young athletes across Meghalaya.
