Shillong, Nov 28: Damalgre Police Station in South West Garo Hills was inaugurated by Sports & Youth Affairs Minister Zenith Sangma on Tuesday.
Forest & Environment Minister Clement Marak, Government Chief Whip Winnerson Sangma, Mahendraganj MLA Dikkanchi D Shira, GHADC CEM Boston Marak and GHADC Chairperson, S.M. Sangma, DGP, SB. Singh besides other police officials were present on the occasion.
The state has now 18 Police Stations dedicated to tackling law and order problems, especially in far flung and remote areas which will demoralize subversive activities by criminals and facilitate swift response in times of emergency.
The jurisdiction of Damalgre police station will extend to 37 villages under South West Garo Hills District including some that were previously under Tura police station.
Addressing the gathering, Zenith said that the police station was the outcome of the government’s endeavor to bring police administration closer to the people.
The Minister said that the government has made steps to strengthen the state’s police force to minimize dependence on central assistance to deal with law and order problems and ensure a sense of security to the people of the region.
He also said that certain difficulties like language barrier created hurdles when central paramilitary forces were deployed in interior villages to contain insurgency and other related problems which eventually resulted in discrimination of the indigenous population.
He also spoke about an effective and transparent recruitment system that has been developed to ensure that only deserving candidates got through the selection process.
The Minister informed that the Chief Minister would also soon lay the base for the college of Architecture and Urban Planning and the Williamson Sangma Technical Institute in Jewillgre, South West Garo Hills.
He also congratulated the people of the region and said that the government was dedicated to fulfill the aims and aspirations of the people.
Earlier, Director General of Police S.B. Singh informed the gathering that the states police force had come a long way since its inception. The state police including the SF-10 have been doing well and they have managed to outdo their counterparts from other states in various training programmes like the NSG, SWAT etc, Singh said.
He also informed that the state police had launched operation “Bonding” under the directive of Chief Minister wherein the objective was to gain the confidence of the people and promote cordial police-public relations.
Prior to the inauguration of the police station South West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Cyril Darlong Diengdoh read out the government notification for the creation of the Damalgre Police Station and handed the document to the Officer in-Charge.
