Shillong, APR 24: Teachers of deficit schools on Tuesday met Education Minister, Lahkmen Rymbui and demanded from the state government to implement the recommendations of the Fifth Pay Commission.

After meeting the Minister, the teachers said that the Minister could not give any assurance and threatened of agitating to pressurize the state government to implement the pay revision as recommended by the Fifth Pay Commission.

A joint delegation of the Khasi Jaintia Deficit School Teachers’ Association (KJDSTA) and Garo Hills Deficit School Teachers and Employees Association (GHDSTEA) met Rymbui in the Secretariat on Tuesday and pressurize the government to implement the pay revision for the benefit of teachers.

Stating that the teachers were disappointed, KJDSTA President ED Nongsiang said, “we expect that some kind of decision would come from the government on the issue. No officials from the education department were present with the minister and he expressed his inability to give any assurance.”

He said that the Minister only said that he would have to study the matter.

The two associations will hold a joint meeting to discuss and decide their next course of action to ensure that the deficit teachers are not deprived of their rights.

The delegation of teachers did not discuss issues related to education policy and school textbooks.
