District Council polls: Additional security forces to be deployed in East Khasi Hills

Shillong Feb 20: East Khasi Hills District Superintendent of Police, Claudia Lyngwa on Wednesday said that additional security forces would be deployed in the district to ensure smooth conduct of the upcoming district council polls to be held on February 27.

Speaking to reporters here, Lyngwa said, “In so far as security is concerned, we are always prepared. Prevention is always better, but sudden spurt of incident may happen but we have the necessary manpower to handle.”

She however informed that till today, there has been no report of any poll-related incidents.

The SP said additional forces would be deployed as the district is having the highest number of polling stations. The additional deployment will be drawn from the state battalions of other districts.

A total of 382 polling stations in the six districts under the two autonomous district councils in Khasi and Jaiñtia Hills region have been identified as “vulnerable” while 66 as “critical”.

Of these, East Khasi Hills District has the highest number of vulnerable polling stations at 109, followed by West Jaiñtia Hills District with 75 such polling stations.

The two districts also have the maximum number of critical polling stations – East Khasi Hills -20 and West Jaiñtia Hills – 23.
