Shillong, September 26: The Office of the District Medical & Health Officer, East Khasi Hills, Shillong, today organized a special programme under the Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan (SNSPA) at Smit PHC, as part of the nationwide campaign being observed from September 17 to October 2, 2025.
The programme saw enthusiastic participation from local communities, school students, health workers, and representatives of village organizations. Posters, IEC materials, and health messages were displayed, focusing on nutrition, TB elimination, and prevention of non-communicable diseases.
The event was graced by Dr. Ricky A J Syngkon, MP, Shillong (ST) Constituency, as the Chief Guest. Shri Ardent B Basaiawmoit, MLA, Nongkrem Constituency, attended as Guest of Honour, while Shri Kitbor Syiem, MDC, Nongkrem Constituency, was present as Special Guest.
Delivering the inaugural address, Dr. Syngkon emphasized the centrality of women’s health to family and societal well-being.
“The health of women is central to the well-being of every family. A healthy mother means healthy children and a stronger society. Through this campaign, the government seeks to ensure early detection and timely treatment so that families do not suffer due to fear or delay. Health is wealth, and good health is the foundation for a better economy and future,” he said.
Guest of Honour Shri Ardent Basaiawmoit, in his address, underlined the importance of personal responsibility in achieving the goal of ‘Health for All.’
“We must not fear knowing our health status — early detection saves lives. I also encourage our youth to actively participate in blood donation, which is a noble service to society,” he said.
Earlier in the day, Dr. A J U Kharkud, District Medical & Health Officer, and Dr. C Iangrai, Joint Director of Health Services (MCH&FW), spoke about the objectives of SNSPA, highlighting its role in strengthening public health outreach through integrated medical camps, blood donation drives, and awareness programmes.
The event also included a Baby Show and Baby Shower competition, with prizes distributed to winners. One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Deiphibakor Kharbudon from Kynton-U-Mon, expressed gratitude for the initiative, sharing that timely vaccination for her child was made possible through the campaign and the efforts of ASHA workers.
The programme was convened by Dr. E L Kharmutee, District MCH Officer, and opened with a welcome address by Dr. R Kharmih, Medical & Health Officer, Smit PHC. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Shri Pyngshongdor Lyngdoh Nongbri, Sordar of Smit Pyllun, followed by a medical camp, blood donation drive, and health awareness activities for the community.
