Shillong May 21: Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday reviewed the status of some major road projects, including expansion of the national highway-40 from Shillong to Tamabil being funded by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The Tura-Dalu road and Ranikor-Baghmara to be taken up under Special Accelerated Road Development Programme for North East (SARDP-NE) were also reviewed. These two roads in Meghalaya would enhance connectivity with Bangladesh through Dawki and Dalu, and also to facilitate connectivity to border haats.
Tynsong, who holds the PWD (roads) portfolio, held the meeting with officials of the roads department, forest, public health engineering, power and Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited, and discussed various issues pertaining to various processes including land acquisition, impact assessment, forest clearance, shifting of utilities along the road for constructing the Shillong-Tamabil road.
Tynsong said that for the Shillong-Tamabil road, a four-lane from Umshyrpi to 7th Miles, Upper Shillong would be constructed. The requirement of land from the army is 3.21 hectares for a stretch of 1.42 km, and 1.5 hectares from the Air Force for a stretch of 1.1 km road at Upper Shillong.
The Shillong-Tamabil project includes construction of a new bridge over Umngot river at Dawki, and this highway will link with Bangladesh.
The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) is implementing the Shillong-Tamabil project.
On the status of the Ranikor-Baghmara road, Tynsong said that the first package of work order from Ranikor to Nongjri about 30km, was allotted to a local firm, Dhar construction company, and this was done by the MoRTH through the NHIDCL. (EoM)
