Easter Dance (Shad Paskha) Spreads Across Shillong Archdiocese, Strengthening Faith and Cultural Identity

Shillong, April 5: The vibrant tradition of Shad Paskha (Easter Dance), first introduced in 1971 by Italian missionary Fr. Nicholas Tuligi during his tenure at Pynursla Parish, continues to flourish across the Shillong Archdiocese, reflecting a unique blend of faith, culture, and community spirit.
Over the years, the tradition has expanded to several parishes, including Pynthorumkhrah Parish, which recently hosted the celebration for the second time at St. Joseph Higher Secondary School. The event witnessed the participation of more than 250 dancers adorned in traditional Khasi attire, creating a colorful and spiritually uplifting atmosphere marked by praise and thanksgiving.
Speaking to the media, Pynthorumkhrah Parish Paskha Committee Chairman, B. Nongbri, highlighted that Shad Paskha is more than a cultural performance—it is a powerful expression of faith and unity. He stressed the need to preserve and promote this cherished tradition for future generations.
He further noted that the dance commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, embodying the message of hope and fulfillment reflected in the Gospel of Matthew. The celebration brings together people of all ages, reinforcing values of renewal, gratitude, and togetherness.
Originally envisioned by Fr. Tuligi as a form of joyful thanksgiving within the Catholic faith, Shad Paskha also serves as a medium to preserve the rich heritage of the Khasi community. Through traditional attire, language, and indigenous practices, the dance reflects a deep-rooted cultural identity intertwined with spiritual devotion.
From its humble beginnings in Pynursla, Shad Paskha has now spread to numerous villages and parishes across the Khasi and Jaintia Hills, standing today as a testament to the enduring legacy of faith, culture, and unity within the community.
