Shillong, Jan 4: Former Congress leader, who has been inducted into the National People’s Party (NPP), Prestone Tynsong claimed the exodus of seven MLAs from the party is a big blow to the Congress ahead of the upcoming Assembly polls.
“This is a big blow for the Congress party no doubt about it,†Tynsong told reporters after he along with seven other former legislators officially joined the NPP at a public rally held in the city here on Thursday.
According to Tynsong, it was the first incident in the history of Congress in Meghalaya where sitting MLAs resigned and joined other political parties.
Out of eight who joined the NPP, five are former Congress MLAs which include former deputy chief minister Rowel Lyngdoh, three former ministers – Prestone Tynsong, Coming one Ymbon and Sniawbhalang Dhar and former Umroi MLA, Ngaitlang Dhar.
The other two former Congress MLAs – AL Hek and P.N. Syiem have joined the BJP and People Democratic Front (PDF) respectively.
Tynsong, also lashed out the chief minister, Mukul Sangma while addressing the rally and termed Mukul the chief minister of only Ampati constituency.
“We are joining the NPP for the sake of the people of the state. We are here to serve the state. Forget about selfishness, self interest because we are serving the people of the state,†he said.
